Skyline joined Erie High School on April 10th to host St. Vrain Valley School District’s first-ever Model United Nations conference. More than 10 Colorado schools attended, with over 100 delegates participating in seven remote committees on the Zoom platform. Co-Secretary Generals, Sara Davis and Ashwini Shrestha ran a wonderful conference. These two seniors have been part of Model UN at Skyline since ninth grade, becoming the first two at SHS to have participated all four years.  Running their own conference in their senior year was a nice full circle moment for them.

 When asked what she has learned from her experiences in the club, Sara says, “I think Model UN has made me a better speaker. I’ve had to learn how to quickly articulate myself, and use my time to actually get something done. When someone is talking in circles or being vague, you can spot it a mile away, and it really undermines any goal you’re trying to accomplish. MUN gives you a lot of practice in breaking that habit.”  Davis added that the whole time Skyline and Erie were planning together, they kept saying, “Why have we never done this before?” She said that they were awesome partners throughout the process.  David Frick, Skyline’s faculty adviser was very impressed with the work of the students. “The part that amazes me is how much they owned this conference, putting their stamp on everything: they authored working papers on topics like lunar colonization, they created an advanced historical council that dealt with the aftermath in the Roman Senate following the assasination of Julius Caesar, and they did all this while preparing for and mastering the Zoom platform.”
